Leaves by the Chalk Goal- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

It was a bright autumn afternoon, and Mia stood in the school courtyard with a wide broom. She aimed to sweep the fallen leaves beyond a faded chalk goal that curved along the fence. A cool breeze raced through the space, and some leaves were already gathering again on the steps she had just cleared. The broom that she held was almost as tall as she was, yet she pushed it firmly. Suddenly the metal tab on her jacket zipper slipped and scratched her chin, adding an unexpected sting. The small accident, together with the restless wind, created a double distraction from her tidy plan.

Mia has already cleared most of the path, but new gusts sent bronze flakes spinning past her shoes. When several leaves were carried back onto the steps, she paused and studied the basket that stored playground balls. An idea sparked; she tipped the basket on its side and rolled it beside the chalk goal. Then she swept again, steering each leaf straight into the hollow basket, where the netted walls trapped the swirling pieces. The wind kept blowing, yet the leaves stayed inside. As the last leaf skipped across the ground, it landed softly on the pile, and the afternoon light settled over the quiet courtyard.
