English 原文
Clara pushed open the town-hall library door just after nine. She had already checked the morning schedule twice, yet the narrow clock near the entrance kept hurrying the minutes forward. The local committee expected a long-lost blueprint at noon, and she planned to place it on their table in time. Dust floated between high windows while her shoes tapped toward the archive balcony. A brittle ladder leaned against shelves packed with boxes and every reference book ever published about the valley. She rubbed her palms, gripped the side rails, and climbed, careful to maintain her balance on the thinning rungs.
The first box offered only postcards; the second held fading invoices. She slid both aside, and paper hissed over wood. A cabinet door then refused to open, so she wiggled its stubborn latch until the hinge surrendered. Still no blueprint. Minutes leaked away. Hoping for a clue, she pulled down a massive reference book indexed in delicate handwriting. The spine creaked, and the volume landed on a table with a dull thump that echoed under the dome. Pages fanned out, revealing maps pinned by time. An insect, bright and quick, skittered across the margin, vanished, returned, and settled on a nearly invisible footnote about architectural storage practices from forty years earlier.
Clara traced the footnote’s ink; beside it, a small arrow indicated the highest cornice behind the philosophy shelf. If she had known the blueprint really waited there, she would have climbed directly to the upper ledge. She replaced the ladder, but one wheel caught on uneven flooring, slowing her again. After a final shove, the wheels rolled true, and she stretched upward. Her fingertips brushed a flat envelope wedged behind a forgotten atlas. The paper had been folded with care; blue lines inside still shone. She hurried downstairs, passing the clock as its bell chimed noon. The unfolded blueprint rested across the committee table under steady afternoon light.
