English 原文
Iris followed the towpath upstream, sketchbook pressed under one arm. Dew clung to her boots, and the early light revealed the riverbank’s timeless beauty—willows bending over water, wooden stalls already unfolding awnings. She paused near a patch of blooming flowers whose colors merged with faint ripples below. Their petals brushed her fingertips while she balanced a charcoal stick against the page, aiming to capture the curves before the market grew crowded.
A roll of patterned cloth tumbled across the stones, struck her ankle, and slid into the flowers. Oren, a tailor unloading bolts from a barrow, hurried after it, coat flapping. He stooped, but the fabric rolled again, snagging on a thorn. Iris knelt first; her pencil slipped, leaving an unintended mark. She laughed without sound, tugged the cloth free, and lifted it toward him. A brisk wind flipped her sketchbook; sheets fluttered like startled birds, scattering charcoal dust across the petals.
Oren steadied the bolt with both hands. The pattern revealed tiny cranes circling clouds, a scene reminiscent of a fable told by riverside storytellers. “Here,” he said, palms open. She placed the bolt inside the cradle of his arms. Charcoal streaks now crossed one crane’s wing; he brushed them away, yet a faint shadow stayed, almost folding into the design. He tilted his head, studying the accidental smudge, then offered a quick grin before returning to the barrow.
Iris reopened her sketchbook; the stray line from the earlier slip arced through the flowers she had outlined, turning them into something new. She traced over the rough curve, letting it become a crane’s wing echoing the cloth. Oren passed again, this time holding small scissors. He paused, observed her page, and set a narrow scrap of the same fabric beside her as compensation for the charcoal trace. A gust lifted the scrap; she caught it on the second try and tucked it between pages as reference. Behind them, stall keepers hammered pegs, and the river current carried their clipped voices downstream. Petals from the willow rested on the calm surface.
