English 原文
In the botanical glasshouse, late-afternoon light angled through ribbed panes, and Pascal lifted a slim camera toward the hanging orchids. A volunteer steward in a green vest kneeled by a tray of seedlings, arranging labels with a diligent touch. The glasshouse held extraordinary biodiversity: velvety moss, spiraling vines, and darting insects shared the warm air. Pascal focused on a swallowtail that drifted between shadows; one crisp photograph of the elusive insect would complete the series he meant to carry out before the exhibition. A metal watering can clinked against the bench as the steward—Mira—shifted position, and the butterfly lifted higher, its path now unpredictable.
Pascal moved sideways along a narrow path edged by puddles, keeping the lens steady. Damp stone tilted under his boot; the surface offered no grip, and he slipped, knees bending to keep balance. Water splashed, ripples spreading across the shallow basin beneath the fern table. Startled by the sudden motion, the swallowtail shot upward and vanished into the lattice of leaves near the roof. Mira glanced over her shoulder; curly hair bounced against her collar, but she spoke only a quick, quiet "Here." She pointed at a wooden ladder resting against a central pillar. Pascal tested a rung; the wood creaked yet held. Climbing slowly, he gained height until his shoulders aligned with the mid-air walkway that looped around the old fig trunk. The ebbing brightness at that level painted stripes across the canopy, enough to silhouette moving wings if the insect returned.
A flutter brushed the silence. Instead of re-entering the orchids, the swallowtail drifted toward Mira below. It circled once, then landed on the brim of her straw hat, wings opening like painted fans. Pascal froze; any click might scatter the scene. He lowered the camera, his breath caught behind closed lips. Mira remained still as petals; only her fingers tightened on the handle of the watering can. After three long heartbeats the ladder answered gravity, sliding a finger-width downward. Wood rasped against the pillar, and the butterfly lifted again—straight toward Pascal’s unmoving shoulder. Reflex pulled his hand from the rail to shield the fragile body, and the sudden shift unbalanced him. The ladder slipped another notch, but his boots pressed outward, regaining contact with the side rails. Camera now forgotten, he descended one step at a time, returning to the mosaic floor just as the swallowtail settled once more. Soft wings rested on the brim of the straw hat.
