English 原文
The midday fountain scattered thin arcs of water across the plaza, catching specks of late-summer sun. Milo edged closer, cradling a narrow sketchpad against his ribs. At the tip of the central spout, a wren balanced on bronze piping, its head tilted, feathers calm. The tiny bird held his pencil in suspension; one neat line waited for completion. A soft click of a camera joined the murmur of traffic. Lucia, a traveler with a wide canvas bag, stepped beside him, lens raised. Neither spoke. The spray drifted between them, cool and grainy. Both leaned, searching for a sharper angle that would keep the glare away from page and glass. The plaza’s footsteps swayed like a slow tide, yet the small perch remained the clearest stage in sight. Milo shifted left, but an umbrella pole blocked half the view, so he returned, breath shallow.
Lucia crouched, testing a lower viewpoint; the stone ledge met her knee, cold and slick. Her fingers formed a steadfast frame around the camera body, unmoving even when the spray dotted the lens. Milo attempted a mirrored crouch, yet his shoe slid on moss, splashing water onto the corner of his sketchpad. He paused, expression guarded, then lifted the damp sheet and pinned it beneath his thumb. The wren appeared dormant, chest still, eyes half-closed, as though the clatter of the plaza had lulled it into a midday pause. A striped cat, lean and deliberate, emerged from beneath a vendor’s bench; city birds recognized such a predator, but the tiny performer on the spout gave no sign. Milo’s pencil hovered. Lucia’s shutter chimed once. Nothing stirred.
The cat tensed. Water beads slipped from its whiskers as it crept along the fountain rim. Milo’s shoe scuffed the stone; the noise cracked the stillness. In the same breath the wren sprang upward, wings flashing against the sun. A single startled flap scattered droplets; Lucia jerked her camera higher while Milo’s hand streaked dark graphite across the page. The cat slid on wet marble and splashed back into the basin, tail whipping. Ripples travelled outward, nudging leaves toward the drains. Plaza footsteps paused, then flowed again. Milo tore the smudged sheet and let it drift with the water; Lucia lowered her lens and laughed, quick and bright. Sunlight rested on the empty spout.
