English 原文
Elena set a folding table near the fountain while early chatter drifted through the square. A striped cloth unfurled across the surface, yet one leg sank into a crack between cobblestones. She pressed a foot against the brace; the hinge groaned but refused to lock. Marco approached, balancing a small kinetic sculpture of copper gears and painted plywood sails. Without greeting, he tipped his head toward the tilted table. “Is it stable?” The question hung beside the rasp of his toolbox sliding to the ground.
They wedged a cork under the short leg, and the tabletop finally leveled. Marco unpacked a tin that rattled with wooden animals, glass beads, and a single queen chess piece carved from maple. Elena arranged each trinket so light would touch the bright edges. A breeze found the sails of the sculpture; cogs spun, clicking softly. The spinning arms brushed the queen, nudging it toward the edge. Elena lunged, fingers grazing polished wood, but the piece flipped over the rim and vanished beneath the table.
Before either of them ducked to retrieve it, a green mantis landed on the nearest sail. Its weight slowed the rotation, turning the elegant swirl into an uneven wobble. That wobble shifted the sculpture’s base, and the entire array of small objects began a slow slide. Beads rolled first, then the wooden animals. The queen reappeared, propelled by the rolling beads, bumped against a brass whistle, and popped back onto the tabletop as if completing a quiet circuit. Elena blinked; Marco let out a single quick laugh that startled the insect. The mantis lifted its front legs, wings shivering, but remained perched.
The brief commotion spread along the row of stalls: heads turned, children pointed at the insect riding the moving sails. With the mantis acting as unplanned ballast, the sculpture rotated at a measured pace, steady enough to keep everything else in place. Beads formed a new crescent around the base; the queen now stood at the center, spotlighted by morning light. Footsteps gathered, coins clinked, and conversation flared without any of it coming from the two exhibitors. Elena flicked an appreciative glance toward the insect while Marco adjusted the cork once more, locking the leg firmly.
Sunlight rested on the balanced sculpture and the quiet mantis.
