They wedged a cork under the short leg, and the tabletop finally leveled. Marco unpacked a tin that rattled with wooden animals, glass beads, and a single queen chess piece carved from maple. Elena arranged each trinket so light would touch the bright edges. A breeze found the sails of the sculpture; cogs spun, clicking softly. The spinning arms brushed the queen, nudging it toward the edge. Elena lunged, fingers grazing polished wood, but the piece flipped over the rim and vanished beneath the table.

With the mantis acting as unplanned ballast, the sculpture rotated at a measured pace, steady enough to keep everything else in place. Beads formed a new crescent around the base; the queen now stood at the center, spotlighted by morning light. Footsteps gathered, coins clinked, and conversation flared without any of it coming from the two exhibitors. Elena flicked an appreciative glance toward the insect while Marco adjusted the cork once more, locking the leg firmly.
