English 原文
Night air lay cool over the town when Mara pushed open the hatch above the public library. Felix climbed after her, balancing a polished telescope between his arms. Street lamps below painted faint orange stripes across the roof, but the sky above kept a deeper shade. Their plan was simple enough: catch the new comet before midnight. Mara had already positioned two folding chairs beside a crate of eyepieces, star charts, and a red torch. A rumble from distant traffic trembled under their feet, then faded. Overhead, thin clouds drifted across the stars, sliding like slow doors across a theatre ceiling.
Felix set the instrument on its tripod, yet the first look offered only a milky blur. Cold breath had fogged the primary mirror; moisture beaded across the glass. Mara dug inside the crate to sort through soft cloths and spare lenses. The cloths had been washed by her grandfather, but lint still clung to the fabric, tickling her knuckles. Their collaboration grew busy and silent: one hand steadied the barrel while the other coaxed the dew from the mirror. When the lens cleared, another obstacle arrived. A bank of cloud wandered straight across the comet’s predicted path. If they had carried a radio, they might have checked a satellite image, yet guessing remained their only option.
While they waited, a small ginger pet roamed from behind an air vent, its tail flicking against a loose wire linked to the roof’s security lamp. The bulb darkened with a pop, and sudden darkness swept away the orange stripes. Stars brightened at once; the cloud fringe thinned enough for a shimmer to break through. Mara whispered a quick thank-you to the unexpected assistant. Felix, already talented at quick adjustments, traced the comet’s coordinates again and nudged the telescope eastward. If the cat had arrived five minutes earlier, they would have saved the polishing struggle, yet the delay somehow sharpened their focus. The tiny comet rested inside the dark circle of glass.
