Hedgehog After the Sprinkler -

English 原文
Heat had baked the garden for weeks, and drought cracks zigzagged through soil. A small hedgehog nosed between dry leaves, aiming for a shallow dish near the porch. The dish held only a pathetic puddle, barely covering the bright ceramic base. Around it, grass lay devastated, its blades brittle and pale. A vine whose green outreach once shaded the step now dangled brown and loose. Beside the vine, a fallen stump carried wildfire scars, deep black lines across gray wood. A faint smell of warm dust floated above the stepping stones. Pale light shimmered softly on the porch rail. Dry air pressed against every leaf in silence. A distant engine hummed softly along the street.
Metal tapped, and the garden sprinkler rose from the soil without warning. Cold jets spun sideways, cutting through smoky heat and splashing over the empty dish. The dish was quickly filled by the spray. Water pooled across the cracked earth, surprising the hedgehog and pushing it back under the vine. Sprays slowed, then settled into a steady arch that landed beside the wildfire-marked stump. The hedgehog shuffled forward again; its paws met new mud that kept tiny prints. It has already crossed dry paths for hours, yet this shift required only a short wiggle. Near the stump, a fresh mirror of water widened where two roots formed a bowl. The animal lowered its snout, tongue flicking at the surface. Ripples spread, and sunlight danced inside the shallow pool.
