English 原文
Spring rain still clung to every branch when Leo stepped off the gravel path and into the soft forest floor. He carried a small notebook, pages thick with sketches and observations—his expanding lexicon of things that croak, flutter, and bloom. One blank page waited for whatever the morning might show.
A slick log blocked the narrow trail. Leo set a foot on it, but moss slid under his boot, and his balance wobbled. The notebook slipped from his pocket, slapped the mud, and spread open like a startled bird. He crouched, lifted it carefully, and shook loose drops free. A darker streak now marked the margin, yet the paper held. Behind him, wind shivered the treetops; their combined timbre deepened, almost like a distant drumroll urging him forward.
The forest opened onto a small clearing where a shallow vernal pool gleamed between reeds. Pale sunlight dappled its surface, and frogs flicked beneath, invisible except for ripples. Leo knelt, turning the muddied page. He scanned the water for movement, eager to record whatever stirred. At first he noticed only drifting leaves, but then a thin brown shape lifted from the silt. Another followed, then another. One by one they climbed the bank, forming a quiet procession over the damp moss.
Leo leaned closer. Each shape bore delicate spots and a sleek tail—the unmistakable body of a salamander. Twenty, perhaps thirty, crossed in single file, their wet skins catching light so they seemed stitched from liquid bronze. Midway across the bank, the lead salamander paused at a curled oak leaf. The line bunched up; tiny toes pressed against one another until the leaf rolled aside. Freed, the column resumed its steady march and slid back into the pool at a different spot, vanishing as smoothly as it had appeared. Leo’s hand moved fast, sketching arcs and dots, trying to capture what his eyes refused to forget.
Thin rings rippled across the vernal pool and then stilled.
