The sudden arrival sent the tarp swinging; boxes clattered, and the stool scooted half a handspan across the floorboards before Milo caught his balance.

The lemur’s bright eyes tracked the rolling brass cylinder. Milo snatched it just before it fell, then lifted the eyepiece. Rotating the end cap scattered jewel-colored triangles across his perception of the dusty room, each twist rearranging light into fresh mosaics. Tiny metal gears inside chimed against one another, creating a faint ting that mingled with the echo of settling dust. Beneath the shifting pattern, the animal tilted its head, dazzled by flickering stains that danced over the walls. A sharp creak rang out as the stool slid again. Milo jerked; the kaleidoscope slipped, bounced on the beam, and cracked open. Glass beads spilled like candy, spinning away in noisy spirals.

The lemur bounded after one bright bead, nudging it with gentle paws until it came to rest beside a brass mirror plate. Without the mirrored guts, the old tube looked oddly hollow, yet colored fragments still sprayed prismatic patches wherever late sun touched them. Milo crouched, gathering the larger pieces, while tiny motes drifted around the skylight. The stool now lay on its side, the earlier displacement finally settling into stillness. Colored shards rested across the wooden floorboards in a silent mosaic.
