A sticker of a bearded philosopher decorated Maya’s notebook; its corners lifted whenever the brisk wind scraped over the ridge. Leo knelt, turning a small screw until the word “calibration” popped up on the screen, then nodded toward the bright sky. Few clouds drifted, but a pair of ravens circled overhead as though judging the arrangement.

A rustle sounded near a patch of alpine grass. An ibex, horns curved like polished crescents, wandered closer, sniffing at the unfamiliar metal.
