English 原文
Warm morning air drifted through the narrow lanes as Milo crossed the marketplace, a wicker basket pressed against his hip. He had promised his aunt to collect the exact quantity of ripe plums she needed for an evening tart. Roasted seeds crackled somewhere behind a curtain of steam, and cool shadows slid under striped awnings. A brass flute whistled above the crowd, then faded when several crates had been stacked in front of the musician’s stool. Milo counted the plums twice, tucked them into a linen pouch, and turned toward the exit, already imagining the smell of baking fruit.
A sudden shove rippled along the walkway; his elbow struck a wooden ledge, and the pouch slipped. If he had known the cloth strap would loosen, he would have knotted it twice. Plums rolled between ankles, tapping sandals and skimming along cobblestones. Milo crouched, but a wheelbarrow rattled past, forcing him aside. He gathered what he could, yet the basket now felt lighter than before. One plum, then another, disappeared behind a barrel where a stray dog sniffed hopefully. Milo tried coaxing the fruit out with gentle hand waves; the dog only tilted its head and trotted off, tail swinging.
Near a shuttered stall, a peculiar metal container rested on a stone ledge, lid half-open. Inside lay three glossy plums, unbruised, beside a curled paper wrapper. Milo hesitated, then noticed the wrapper’s grease print matched the vendor who had sold him his missing fruit. The plums seemed to have rolled here and settled neatly. A rare herb had been hidden beneath them, releasing a minty scent that reminded him of his aunt’s garden. He placed the rescued fruit into his basket, slid the herb into his pocket, and clicked the lid shut. The carved bird rested beside fresh plums inside the peculiar container.
