Dust hung in the air; a single sunbeam acted as a filter, turning drifting motes into tiny floating coins. Joel set it aside and stacked two paint buckets, but the improvised tower slid, leaving him in a brief, breathless quandary. If he had kept the original stool, the climb would have been simple. Instead, he dragged a sturdy workbench beneath the shelf, wiped loose nails away, and balanced on its scarred top. From this height, he could finally lift the birdhouse, yet the base refused to budge, held tight by a rusted screw. On the third try, Joel jammed a thicker flathead under the head of the screw, and the metal finally gave way. The birdhouse lifted, revealing a shallow cavity in the shelf that he had never noticed. Inside, a tiny glass slide lay wrapped in waxed paper; when sunlight touched it, a mellow portrait glimmered across the dust.
