English 原文
Maya pushed through the loose boards and stepped into the old carriage shed. Afternoon beams cut between gaps, marking stripes across the floor where a grey cat paced. Years earlier the town’s cycling champion had stored trophies here; cracked pedestals still lined one wall, creating an odd gallery in what now served as Maya’s creative space. The rolling door had been painted green years earlier, yet rust now masked the colour. She had collected brushes and plywood that morning, planning to paint sets for the school play. To do that, she needed the wide door open for light. The cat paused beneath the door, tail twitching, while Maya wrapped both hands around the cold metal handle and pulled upward.
The door lifted ten centimeters before the wheels jammed. Dust drifted down, and the cat sprang back. Maya tried again, muscles shaking, yet the panels refused to climb higher. She fetched an iron bar, wedged it under the bottom rail, and pressed her weight. The mechanism groaned, rose another span, then crashed, rattling paint tins across the floor. If she had measured the track before, the jam might have surprised her less. While she caught her breath, something small slid out from the upper groove: a straw bundle, loosely woven. It landed beside the cat, and two speckled eggs rolled onto Maya’s shoe.
The unexpected nest altered her plan. Maya nudged it onto a shallow box away from danger, the cat observing with unblinking patience. Opening the side window became the next attempt. Hinges resisted, but steady pressure and a burst of wind driven by the early evening breeze finally set the frame wide. Light poured in, bouncing from metal trophies to the waiting canvases. Layers of color already on one board showed her commitment; perhaps future generations preparing another play would notice those strokes and add their own. Brushes lay ready, and the cat curled up near the eggs. Light rested on the fresh canvas beside the calm cat.
