English 原文
The converted brick factory stood quiet at noon, its tall windows scattering square patches of light across stainless counters. Leo, a young apprentice cook, stepped inside carrying a canvas bag from the local market. Fresh peppers knocked against glass jars while he unloaded them beside an electric hot plate; he planned to create a quick sauce before afternoon judging. He had been practicing for three weeks, yet every trial felt different in this echoing room. Across the room, a visiting chef sorted knives, yet paid no attention. The heavy outlet had been installed by earlier tenants, and its switch clicked unevenly when his fingertip pressed down.
At the first attempt, the plate failed to heat, so the peppers waited while Leo tracked the loose wire toward a junction box. After nudging the cable, a faint glow rose under the pan, and oil shimmered. A sudden sizzle promised progress, but the sound died when the clogged burner spat a cold puff. He scraped residue, replaced the pan, and added crushed tomato; the liquid thickened too quickly. If he had noticed the blocked vent sooner, steam would have escaped instead of clouding his glasses. He shifted to the next station, wiping moisture from the steel surface.
He stirred again, unaware of the vent fan high above until metal fins twitched. Air rushed, shaking dust hidden on the blades. Without warning, a shower of reddish powder drifted straight into the bubbling mixture. The unexpected spice spread across the surface like tiny islands, releasing sharp aroma through the hall. Leo stepped back; the sauce darkened, richer than before, and the revived sizzle echoed between walls. He tasted a drop with the tip of a wooden spoon, then left the pan to settle on the warm plate. Steam drifted above the pan while colored flecks rested on its glossy surface.
