English 原文
Morning sunlight slanted through the dusty auditorium, painting long rectangles across rows of red cloth. Near the stage, a grey-haired technician named Mira loosened cables that trailed from a brand-new projector. Beside her, Carl, the nervous apprentice, balanced a toolbox on his knee and tried to match each plug to its port. They had promised a student film club that the screen would glow before lunchtime, yet the first attempt failed: the picture flickered, then vanished. The extension cord proved too short, so Carl dragged a wheeled cart closer while Mira adjusted the tripod feet. The old bulb had been replaced by a brighter one, yet the machine still kept silent.
A faint smell of varnish lingered under the heavy curtain; somewhere above, air vents hummed. Dust motes drifted through the beam of a single work lamp, spiralling like pale insects. When power finally reached the socket, fresh resistance appeared. The cooling fan rattled against its casing, and the menu controls froze each time Mira pressed them. If the lens had cracked, their evening would have ended early, but a soft cloth and careful breath cleared the glass instead. Slides that had been arranged earlier were loaded again, only to vanish behind a sudden blue warning screen. Carl’s shoulders tightened; he swapped batteries inside the remote, then restarted the sequence.
At last an image sprang forward, but it was not the opening title the club expected. A bright cartoon turtle waddled across the canvas, wearing Mira’s company logo like a cape. Laughter rippled through the half-filled seats; the accidental clip helped break the ice between crew and audience, and quick claps echoed near the back. Mira shrugged, nodded at Carl, and pressed play once more. This time the correct short film rolled without complaint, and soft light rested on the empty rows.
