Mateo pushed through the warped door of the station store-room and paused. Light slipped past a roof crack and touched the clutter: stacked crates, rolled banners, a leaning bicycle. He needed the narrow cabinet in the far corner; a note from the station manager said an old ticket ledger might still be inside. To reach it, he had to dive into a low mound of discarded seat cushions. Threadbare fabric puffed grey dust into the air, and the wooden floor answered with creaks that sounded like growing pains held inside the planks.

A rust-patched stepladder rested nearby. Mateo gripped its side rails, seeking support before climbing, yet the first rung sagged. He adjusted, placing his foot farther in. Step by step, he rose until his shoulders met cobwebs. From that height the cabinet latch was reachable, but the metal resisted his pull. He pressed again; the hinge squealed, then snapped free. The sudden shift tossed him off balance, and he grabbed the ladder with one caring hand while the other steadied the door.

Inside, instead of ledgers, small cardboard boxes filled every shelf. Their labels had peeled years earlier, ink washed away by damp air. Mateo lifted the top box; the bottom gave way, and its contents slid forward. Miniature shoes—painted red, blue, and green—tumbled onto the ladder and clattered across the floor. He blinked, stepped down, and crouched. Each pair carried faint scuffs on the toes, as if a parade of children had walked corridors nobody remembered. The surprise left him motionless long enough for a train horn outside to echo through the wall.

He gathered the shoes into a shallow basin, counting them without knowing why. Nothing else in the cabinet hinted at tickets or money—only more boxes identical to the first. A distant rumble vibrated the rafters; a few flakes of plaster drifted onto his sleeve. Mateo closed the cabinet, sliding the broken box beside the ladder for later collection, and nudged the basin beneath a patched bench. Dust hung in the sunlit strip between two cracked boards.
