When the Sandcastle Fell- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Warm air smelled of salt and grain, and sunlight flashed on shallow puddles. A guinea pig called Pepper twitched his nose under a bright umbrella. Beyond the colored towel, a red bucket stood upright, and a fresh lettuce leaf rested inside. The bucket has stood there since morning, untouched by waves. A child nearby shaped wet sand into a high sandcastle. Towers, small bridges, and a deep moat had been carved with care. The child leaned back to admire the work, tapping the last tower flat with a plastic shovel. Pepper pressed against the low fence of his travel pen, wood chips falling behind him. The green leaf shone above the bucket’s rim, and his paws scraped the sand as he squeezed through an opening.

Loose sand slid under his tiny claws, slowing each step. The bucket’s smooth side offered no grip, and the moat’s edge crumbled. While Pepper circled, a wide wave hissed across the beach. Water filled the moat, then rolled away, leaving the left wall of the sandcastle flattened. The fallen wall formed a gentle ramp that reached half the bucket’s height. A damp starfish lay near the new slope, its arms moving slightly with leftover water. Pepper skirted the starfish, claws tapping wet sand, then climbed the ramp. He nudged the bucket, and the lettuce leaf dropped onto the ground. Sand grains stuck to the leaf, yet his teeth worked through them. His whiskers brushed the bucket while the tide retreated quietly.
