Stardust in the Mug- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Late afternoon light filled the small balcony behind Kai’s apartment. A plastic spacecraft waited on a cardboard stand, still dull and white. Kai has painted many models before, yet none have required powder this fine. A jar of silver dust, bright as stardust, stood open beside a steaming mug of hot chocolate. The air smelled of wet stone from morning rain, and distant traffic hummed below. A striped cat named Milo stretched on the warm tiles, its tail flicking toward the stand. Kai lifted a thin brush, aiming to spread glue along the tiny wings. The light breeze moved the curtain behind him.

A sudden gust slipped through the doorway and lifted the silver powder before the brush touched it. The light cloud drifted across the balcony; Milo’s whiskers twitched, and the cat pounced. The jar rocked against the mug and produced a dull tap. Rich liquid splashed over the floor, spreading quickly. The powder settled into it, forming swirling galaxies inside the brown pool. A few bright flecks were carried under the balcony rail by the wind. Kai steadied the stand, knees bent and shoulders tense. He slid the mug onto a tray that blocked further spread. The spacecraft, which had stayed upright, now rested inside the tray like cargo on a silent deck. With the mess contained, Kai chose to take a break and wiped the tiles with slow strokes. Eventually the tray dried, Milo curled beside it, and faint stardust rings shone on the cat’s nose.

一陣突來的風穿過門縫，把銀粉捲起，刷子還沒碰到模型。輕盈的粉雲飄過陽台；米洛的鬍鬚抽動，牠猛然撲去。罐子撞上杯子，發出鈍響。濃稠的液體迅速濺滿地面。銀粉落入其中，在褐色水漥裡形成旋轉的銀河。幾點亮閃被風吹到陽台欄杆外。凱彎膝收肩扶住架子，隨即把杯子滑到一個托盤內，阻止擴散。保持直立的太空船此刻安穩地待在托盤裡，如同靜靜停靠的貨物。亂局受限後，凱決定稍作休息，慢慢擦拭地磚。托盤終於乾了，米洛蜷在旁邊，微弱的星塵圓環在牠鼻尖閃閃發光。
