Flakes of new white paint covered half the doorway, yet the stone beneath showed grooves left by generations of shoes. A row of faded posters peeled from the noticeboard; beneath them, brighter rectangles revealed where newer sheets had hung during spring. Orion’s goal sat inside this building: a cloth-bound notebook he had dropped behind a radiator months earlier. The notebook mattered because an envelope in his bag—evidence of a long-awaited scholarship—referred to notes inside it. Dust floated in the beam of sun that crossed the threshold, marking the slow passing of seasons almost as clearly as any calendar.

The handle felt warm from daylight but refused to turn at first; metal edges snagged against an unseen burr. Orion pressed harder, the latch shifted, and the heavy door opened with a muffled groan. Inside, the air carried chalk and dried carpet glue from a recent repair. Rows of seats climbed toward tall windows, some cushions freshly reupholstered, others patched with tape. Orion stepped between chairs. At that moment a sudden cross-draft barreled through the side corridor; loose sheets on the desk rose, and the scholarship envelope slipped from his pocket. Instinct pulled his hand after it, but the envelope skimmed away, unstoppable on the polished aisle and disappearing beneath the fourth row. The facilitator straightened. Without a word, she moved to the opposite side, knees brushing seat backs while Orion crouched low. Their parallel motions disturbed more dust, and sunlight fractured through it in swirls, turning the hall into a snow globe of grit and gold.

A scuffed ruler under the woman’s arm proved narrow enough to reach the gap. She slid it forward, nudged the envelope, and Orion caught it before the next gust. He offered a quiet thanks; she answered with a quick nod, then returned to her ribbons. Behind the radiator, the lost notebook still waited, its spine slightly warped yet pages intact. When Orion finally lifted it free, a pressed gingko leaf fell onto the seat beside him, edges still green despite the months apart. The leaf lay motionless against the gray fabric.
