English 原文
Lena pushed open the storage attic, letting afternoon dust sparkle across stacked crates. She had been hunting for novel experiences while visiting the shop each summer. Among the boxes, a small walnut music case caught her eye with its tarnished latch. The lid had been carved by a careful hand, but the hinge sat stiff and silent. She wanted to hear whatever tune still lived inside the box that dusty afternoon. Paint on the walls showed faint squares where brighter posters once hung, clear evidence that as time goes by, color runs away.
Warm air rose from the boards; a lazy fly circled beneath the single hanging bulb. Lena tried to pick up the box, yet the bottom stuck to a strip of melted wax. She slid a ruler underneath, lifted again, and the weight finally shifted. When the latch refused to budge, she reached for tools scattered on a shelf. A bent screwdriver looked like a wildcard that might solve nothing or everything. Its tip slipped once, scraping the metal and raising a brief ring.
She wished she had brought a dash of oil, yet decided to improvise. She breathed on the hinge, rubbed it with the corner of her sleeve, and pressed again. This time the latch clicked; the lid rose a finger’s width, squealing like a tiny door left out in rain. Instead of the gentle waltz she expected, an abundant rush of sharp notes spilled. The notes raced faster than any memory she could place within her growing silence. Halfway through the tune, one spring snapped, and the melody collapsed into uneven taps. If the hinge had failed sooner, she would have missed the broken music's strange beauty. The slowed brass wheel now rested against the faded velvet lining inside.
