The Twig That Stopped the Acorn- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

A striped chipmunk gripped a round acorn between its teeth beside a quiet hiking trail. Rain during the night has left blotches of damp dirt along the ground, and patches glisten under thin sunlight. Morning mist hung over nearby ferns; a woodpecker drummed somewhere beyond the bend. The chipmunk’s ears rotated toward a slope where an old maple offered shelter inside a low hollow. The way rose steadily uphill, and loose grains slid whenever the small animal tested the first step. It tried to push forward, but the acorn rolled from its mouth and bounced back to the flat path. Claws scraped for balance, tail flicking, yet the hill and the shifting ground blocked further progress.

On the second attempt, the chipmunk changed tactic. It pressed the acorn against its chest, curled forelegs tight, and used hind paws to dig shelves in the dirt. Each shelf has already broken once under weight, but now small roots have stiffened the surface. Halfway up, a sudden gust rattled leaves overhead; the acorn slipped, rolled downward, and seemed lost. However, a fallen twig lay across the track and arrested the roll. The chipmunk darted, reclaimed the prize, and climbed beside the twig, using it as a narrow railing. At the top, the hollow waited, already partly fulfilled by other nuts gathered earlier. The new acorn joined the pile, an ordinary accomplishment of steady paws and patient claws. Light filtered through the maple leaves while the chipmunk’s whiskers twitched above the resting heap.

第二次嘗試時，花栗鼠改變方式。牠把橡實壓在胸前，前腿抱緊，用後腳在泥土上挖出小台階。先前台階常塌，但現在細根把表面撐得更硬。爬到一半，突來的風抖動樹葉，橡實滑落往下滾，看似要失去。卻有一根倒枝橫在路上，剛好攔住滾動。花栗鼠衝去重新抱起戰利品，沿著樹枝當成細扶手再爬。頂端的洞口已被先前收集的堅果部分填滿。新的橡實加入堆中，成了牠用穩健爪力完成的一件小成就。楓葉篩下的光斑照著洞口，花栗鼠的鬚毛在堅果堆上輕輕顫動。
