English 原文
Lucas pushed open the side door of the community hall, dust floating across the beam of his flashlight. Faded posters from a networking event had been pinned to the cork wall; their curled corners showed they had hung there for weeks. He had come for one simple goal: retrieve the hall’s old projector before the afternoon workshop began. Tables once arranged in a goal-oriented grid now stood at odd angles, leaving narrow paths between dangling cables. His boots scraped across the floor as he followed those paths, busy as a bee among abandoned name tags and empty cups. The air carried a faint smell of stale coffee. If someone had cleared the place earlier, he would have reached the storage room without delay, yet tonight the clutter turned each step into a goal-oriented journey that zigzagged from chair to chair.
The metal storage cabinet waited near the back wall, its handle streaked with rust. Lucas pulled, but the latch refused to lift. The door had been held closed by layers of dried tape that someone had applied after the last show. Using a plastic ruler, already cracked, he pried at the seal; the tape split after several attempts, yet the hinges groaned before swinging open. Inside lay ample resources: extension cords, bulbs, and stacks of blank badges, yet no projector appeared. He knelt, ran fingertips beneath a pile of cables, and knocked against a wooden crate. The crate had been secured by tiny screws, so he borrowed a coin to twist them free. If the screws had tightened any farther, he would have lost precious minutes. The lid finally lifted, revealing the projector, but a spider-web crack spread across its main lens. Beneath it, wrapped in bubble film, a palm-sized backup unit waited. A palm-sized projector rested on the scratched wooden table under quiet strips of afternoon light.
