Marco pushed open the cracked greenhouse door after school. Heat pressed through broken roof panels, and dry air smelled of metal dust. Outside, a long drought had turned the garden soil into pale crusts. Inside, twelve tiny seedlings waited in shallow trays near his shoes. He had promised himself to keep them alive, so he carried a hose. His shoulders stayed confident, even while dust settled on his hair. A loose sheet of plastic flapped above him, tapping a slow rhythm.

He turned the rusty tap that connected the greenhouse tank to the hose. Only a thin trickle arrived, mixed with brown silt. The mixture blocked the nozzle and splashed over his shoes. He stepped back, wiped mud away, and studied the wooden shelves. One loose board tilted as he touched it, revealing a dark space beneath. A hidden barrel sat there, half covered by cobwebs. Rainwater, trapped earlier in the year, had been stored inside the barrel. Its lid lifted with a creak, and cool water reflected bits of afternoon light. He fixed a small hand pump, the only instrument that still worked among the old tools. After several strokes, water flowed smoothly into the watering can. Fresh drops landed on the dusty leaves, and each seedling straightened a little. Green points lifted toward the light, marking a visible new beginning for the quiet greenhouse. Water kept dripping from the can in a soft line across the floorboards. Marco watched the line grow longer, then rested the pump beside the barrel. The last sun ray touched the seedlings and stayed on their wet leaves.
