English 原文
Thin winter sun pooled through the stained-glass dome of the city library, drawing slow colors across the tiled floor. Leo stepped inside with a folded sketchbook under his arm, scanning the rows for the natural-history wing. The air carried the quintessential smell of old paper mixed with furniture wax. Along the far wall, a towering oak bookcase held bird manuals that dated back decades; faded labels lay under warped glass, and a ladder rested against its frame. Leo hoped to capture the curve of a puffin’s beak for a new drawing, so he aimed for the highest shelf where the oldest illustrations probably waited.
Ladders rolled on narrow rails, yet the wheels snagged where varnish had chipped. He nudged them forward, climbed three rungs, and reached for a thick volume. The spine wedged; wood around it had swollen after countless humid summers. He tugged again. The entire bookcase creaked outward, then held. Dust drifted. A panel behind the seized book shifted enough to hint at a hollow space. His glove caught on a splinter; he paused, flexed his fingers, and tried again, feeling a faint vibration travel from the ladder into the parquet floor. Leo braced his knee against the rung, pressed the edge of the volume sideways, and the panel slipped open with a muted pop, releasing a stale, peppery scent he could not place.
He eased the hidden drawer out. Inside lay a wax-paper bundle pressed flat beside a carved wooden puffin no longer than his thumb. The bird’s paint had cracked into fine islands of color, and its eye glittered with a tiny bead of glass. Curious, Leo unwrapped the bundle. A slice of smoked brisket, dark and dry as parchment, occupied the center, preserved by the library’s steady coolness. A scrap of paper might once have explained the odd pairing, yet only brittle crumbs remained along the edge. He chuckled under his breath, slid both discoveries into his coat pocket, and replaced the drawer.
As he descended, air from a nearby vent fluttered loose pages on a reading table, rustling them like quiet wings. The ladder wheels squeaked, and the panel settled back into place, nearly disappearing among the shelves. Down below, Leo arranged his sketchbook, the puffin figurine, and the ancient brisket on the marble tabletop. A school group murmured at the entrance, their footsteps scattering when a bell chimed elsewhere, yet the natural-history wing stayed apart, sealed in its mosaic of hushed motion. Colored light from the dome shifted again, circling the objects in slow motion while the tall bookcase stood perfectly still.
