A grease pencil still marked the wing tip where his retired-carpenter neighbor, once a patient mentor in model craft, had shown him how to shave an edge without splintering it. From this height the stage looked small, almost toy-like. Leo aimed the nose of the glider toward the orchestra pit, drew a breath, and set the little craft into motion with a gentle launch.

The first flight lasted barely a heartbeat. A sluggish pocket of air sagged beneath the wings, bending the trajectory downward until the glider brushed a velvet curtain rope and spun to the floor. Leo scrambled down, cheeks warming, retrieved the model, and pressed along the fuselage for cracks. None appeared. He pinched each aileron, widening their angle in quiet adjustment, then climbed again; wooden planks creaked under every hurried step while distant footsteps signaled players returning.

On the second launch a sudden breeze slipped through the open roof slats. The breeze caught the widened wings and flung the glider past Leo’s intended arc. Instead of drifting toward the pit, the model arced upward, skimmed a lighting rig, and burst above the stage like a bright insect. Musicians re-entering gasped, then broke into jubilant laughter as the glider clipped a paper banner left from a morning rehearsal. The banner split, releasing a hidden pouch of colored squares. Confetti whirled, sparkling in the spotlights and spilling over violin cases, piano keys, and brass stands. Weight pulled the banner down at last, and the wind slackened. The glider, robbed of lift, tilted, brushed a cymbal stand with a metallic ping, and glided no farther. It slid between two black cables at the front of the stage and disappeared into shadow. Stagehands hurried to sweep the confetti before the conductor could step back onto the rostrum. Leo stayed atop the bench, hands on the rail, watching the sudden hush settle over instruments and floorboards while programs rustled below. The small glider rested among silent cables below the footlights.
