English 原文
Salt haze drifted above flat rocks while thin sunlight flicked across shallow pools. Mara, a museum conservator, steadied a folding tripod beside a patch of ribbon-thin seaweed that covered one slick stone. Leo, her older nephew, adjusted a mechanical chronometer on his wrist; the brass cover glinted each time the dial turned. Both watched the water surface, counting quiet seconds until the next swell eased and the camera could rest lower. A fist-sized hermit crab shuffled near their boots, dragging a cracked shell that rocked like a tiny helmet. The animal’s slow progress forced Mara to lift one foot sideways, keeping the fragile creature in view and holding her balance on a manageable ridge of barnacles.
When the wave withdrew, Leo crouched and pressed the shutter. The lens caught a glare line, leaving the image washed white. He changed position, angling the glass downward, yet a returning splash dusted the front element with spots. Mara wiped the surface, but the tripod feet slipped; metal scraped limestone, and the frame tilted. Behind them the hermit crab climbed onto one tripod leg, pumping its claws against the steel. Leo paused, waited for the crab to drop, then tried again. Another swell rattled stones, and the water rose just high enough to flood the patch they watched, turning green fronds into a wavering mirror.
Mara leaned forward, lowering the camera until the housing almost touched water. The brass chronometer shook loose from Leo’s wrist and splashed into the pool; the explorer hat on his head dipped as he lunged. Fingers closed around the instrument, but a ribbon of seaweed wrapped the strap, binding it to the tripod leg. Working together, they eased the plant away without tearing its stems. The tide slipped back once more, the surface cleared, and a final image locked the plant’s pattern inside the sensor. Above the pool, their tripod stood steady while sea spray cooled its metal legs.
