English 原文

Miles arrived at the quiet quayside before sunrise, intent on checking the small research buoy tied to the inner pier. An ocean breeze crossed the open water and carried salt toward his cheeks. Low gull cries faded behind warehouse walls. Thin mist held to the ropes, making them damp and slick. A carved wooden bear, once fixed as decoration on the pier gate, had tilted during last week’s storm; its painted nose now pointed toward the water. The tide sat low, so the buoy’s line draped loosely across dark pilings. Miles pressed one boot against a beam and reached for the rope.

Miles tugged. The knot refused to shift, and a sudden surge rolled beneath the planks, jerking the rope from his grip. He braced his knees, leaned forward again, and looped the line around a cleat for leverage. The buoy stirred but would not rise; barnacles gripped its base like tiny clamps. He fetched a pole that had been left by harbour workers, eased the hook under the rim, and lifted. Water sloshed over his sleeves, forcing him back. The knot still held. He changed tactic, twisting the pole sideways; wood creaked while old fibers frayed, then loosened by slow degrees.

A green glass bottle surfaced beside the buoy as the line slid free. It looked ordinary until Miles noticed a ceramic figure inside: a miniature lighthouse standing beside a stone guardian. Both models rolled inside trapped air, completely dry. He balanced the bottle on a crate and examined the buoy itself. The casing, repaired years earlier, had been patched with mesh that was now half-torn; daylight filtered through the gap. Rather than haul the device ashore, he decided to remove only the fouled rope. He coiled the freed length neatly, left the buoy rocking, and stepped back from the edge. A loose fender bobbed against the wooden posts.
