Nia kicked a pale pebble along the coastal path and watched it bounce toward the high-tide line. A small pouch hung at her belt; she hoped to fill it with bright sea glass before the sun lowered. She stepped onto packed sand, yet each time she bent for a shard, water rushed over her boots and buried the colors under moving foam. Her stride slowed, and her gaze began to wander across the beach for a drier place to work. A dark board, washed up beside a rock pool, offered shelter from the waves, so she crouched behind it.

While she cleared wet sand from the board’s edge, the board shifted. Salt water spilled into a narrow groove that had been hidden beneath. The sudden stream loosened more sand, and broken shells slid after it like tiny sleds. One shell nudged an old bottle neck, the glass still whole. The neck tipped, releasing trapped air; a louder gurgle followed, and the water poured faster. The widening channel pulled in even more foam, lifting a tangled clump of ribbon weed. The weed drifted, snagged a twig, and the twig tapped a child’s carved narwhal that lay half buried nearby. The wooden shape rolled unexpectedly, blocking the flow and sending water in a fresh direction.

A rising pool now threatened Nia’s pouch, so she pressed the board upright again to hold the new current. The sheet of wood braced against the sand, and the redirected water curved away from her knees. Foam kept circling the stranded narwhal, but the tide no longer swallowed the scattered glass pieces. She gathered several green shards, slid them into her pouch, and stood. Behind her, water rippled around the small wooden animal and streamed back through the crooked channel toward the deeper pool.

上升的水池快要淹到妮亞的袋子，她再次把木板豎直，用來抵住新水流。木板穩穩撐住沙面，改道的水遠離她的膝蓋。泡沫仍在獨角鯨周圍旋繞，但潮水不再吞沒散落的玻璃碎片。她撿起幾片綠色亮片，放進袋中，站了起來。在她身後，水紋繞著小木獸流轉，沿歪斜的水道返回較深的水窪。
