English 原文
A flat, glossy shard lay half-buried in damp sand, its edges catching morning light like a silent mirror. Tiny bubbles speckled the dark surface, and a thin ridge along one side gleamed where grains had rubbed it smooth. Mira crouched beside the shard, brushing away loose sand with the back of her hand; the glass resisted for a moment before sliding free. She balanced it on her fingertips and noticed the pieces of shell that clung to its underside. Behind her, the vast ocean pushed slow folds of water toward the shore, each fold leaving a hiss that faded into the gulls. The distant oceanfront walkway remained empty except for a lone overturned bucket near a bench.
Salt wind swept across the beach, then paused in a brief lull, giving her hair a chance to settle against her neck. During the quiet, faint heat lingered in the shard, unexpected this early, as though it had kept yesterday’s sunlight. When the breeze returned, she held the fragment up to it; amber sparks appeared inside the dark body, revealing threads that curved inward like frozen smoke. The pattern reminded her of pictures of a nearby volcano she had once studied in a guidebook, where molten rock cooled fast enough to lock bubbles in glass. She turned the edge toward a driftwood plank, testing how sharply it could score the pale grain without splintering.
A stronger gust staggered her stance, and the shard slipped, landing point first in a shallow tide pool. She stepped in after it, but the rock bed under the thin water proved slick, and her first grab closed on nothing but seagrass. Knees braced, she tried again; water parted, and the fragment surfaced between her palms. A pale line now ran across its center where salt had dissolved a film she had not noticed before. She tilted it toward the sun. What she had trusted as solid glass now appeared layered: a clear shell peeling from a dull metal core. The change drew a short laugh from her throat; she had been ready to utilize it as a cutting tool, yet it had hidden its own brittleness.
She climbed out of the pool and wiped sand from her elbows while waves shuffled pebbles along the line of weed. More water dripped from the fragment; the metal underside already showed flecks of rust that never would have come from volcanic glass. She tapped the surface once; a dull note echoed, hollow and thin, unlike the bright chime she had expected. After a brief pause, she carried the piece to the empty bench, turning it so the cracked face caught the open sky instead of the sea. The bench paint had faded, yet the shard gleamed against it. Mira walked back toward the tide line; behind her, the mottled fragment stood upright against the wooden slat.
