Warm sunlight pressed on the trimmed grass. Far off, soft music mixed with the quiet hiss of soda cans. Near a stone path, a noisy family reunion covered the park tables with bright cloth and tall pitchers. A young grey squirrel clung to a maple trunk, its nose twitching toward the sweet scent drifting from a bowl. The bowl stood inside a low wooden enclosure that framed the food like a fence. The cooler was placed on a bench beside it, and many crumbs have fallen between the planks since morning. People moved with clear intent, lifting plates and waving napkins. The transparency of a plastic lid that covered the bowl made each apple slice shine like a coin, yet the squirrel could only watch.

Another squirrel dropped from a branch and landed near the first. Together they rushed toward the enclosure, but a child stepped close, so both animals froze against the shadowed rail. When the child turned away, the first squirrel squeezed through a narrow gap while the second stayed outside and pushed the lid with steady effort. The lid tipped, yet the apple slid deeper, protected by the cooler’s edge. A surprise came when a rolling orange slipped from the cooler and tapped the bowl; the movement jolted one slice free. The slice fell through the gap, and both squirrels grabbed opposite ends before racing for the nearest tree. Behind them, water from an automatic sprinkler arched across the now quiet bench.
