Cool, wet sand pressed against Eve's palms as she traced a spiral near the quiet shore. Small grains clung to her fingers; she brushed them away and collected flat pebbles from a shallow pool. She lined the stones along the groove, spacing each one with slow care. A patch of washed-up seaweed lay beside her design. It had passed through another life cycle, turning from deep green to pale straw. Beyond the sand, rolling water kept a dynamic rhythm. It lifted foam forward and then dragged it back with a soft hiss. A salty smell mixed with the low rumble of distant breakers beyond her.

A few steps away, a young penguin waddled toward the water, flapping round wings against the breeze. It slid on its belly for a moment and then stood again. The bird pecked at broken shells, unaware of Eve or her spiral. The ocean kept its own work; each new swell rose with greater magnitude than the last. When the tallest wave burst, Eve caught a quick glimpse of silver beneath the crest. Water rushed across the beach a moment later. The surge slapped against the spiral and rolled over the penguin’s black feet. It scattered half the pebbles into a fresh pool. Eve laughed and crouched to gather the runaway stones. Yet she left the marks where the penguin’s toes pressed the wet sand. The bird, now examining one bright pebble, nudged it back toward the groove. Seaweed threads drifted beside them, caught in tiny circles of current. Two sets of prints framed the repaired spiral, while water slid around the edge with a faint swirl.
