Sticky sap clung to Sage's fingertips as she lifted the cracked plank near the garden shed. Flakes of green paint slid off the timber with each stroke of her small steel scraper. Her goal was simple: cover the worn board with fresh color before evening. She visited this bench regularly, and the weathered surface now showed sun-bleached rings where flowerpots once sat. The chalkboard from yesterday's gardening lesson still leaned against the wall behind her. A faint smell of damp earth mixed with the metallic ring of a distant bell. While she worked, rainwater from last night dripped steadily through a narrow gutter above the doorway. The drops landed on a stone below, bounced once, then ran in a stream toward the dirt path. For several minutes, her sanding rhythm and the quiet dripping followed separate patterns, neither bothering the other.

A sudden gust bent the gutter, and the next drop missed the stone. The water splashed across the plank just as Sage brushed freshly mixed paint onto it. Cold liquid spread over the wet color, carrying curls of old dust toward the edges. Glen had been quietly stacking tools nearby all afternoon. Teamwork appeared when he pressed his sleeve against the spreading puddle and Sage tilted the board. Their chosen technique slowed the flow a little. Even so, no clear improvement reached the surface; cloudy swirls still floated in the paint. They tried thicker strokes, then shorter taps, but the washed patch refused to blend with the rest. In the end, the plank lay on two bricks, half bright and half blurred. Dripping continued from the gutter, and wet boot prints crossed the dull plank near the door.
