A gap the width of two crates separated Reed’s fruit stall from Olive’s stand of spinning toys. Reed crouched in that gap, resting a narrow wooden board between a low shelf and a basket of oranges. He sent a coin rolling down the board; the coin gained speed, struck a rubber ball, and the ball bounced into a stack of paper cups. Cups toppled, slid across smooth canvas, and the stall cat flinched as one cup brushed its tail.

Olive watched, then handed Reed an old battery she had found beneath her scale. Reed placed the battery at the top of the board for a second run. It rolled faster than the coin, hit the rubber ball harder, and the ball shot beneath the spinning-toy stand. A spool of bright ribbon shook loose, unwound, and tangled with the fallen cups from the first chain. The ribbon’s sudden pull tipped a crate of empty glass jars; each jar rocked forward, tapping the next in a slow wave that echoed along the wooden stand.

Melted ice from the fish vendor flowed near the jars, raising a cool mist that caught noon light and painted a faint rainbow above the mess. Water lapped against a tray of wet shells, building a tiny shore around Reed’s shoes. The market dog lunged for the rolling battery, skidded on the misted canvas, and nudged the ribbon further. Reed and Olive laughed, then lifted cups, ribbon, and jars into a new path, letting the battery sit at the start once more. Reed balanced the last cup on its edge beside Olive’s ribbon bridge. Their zig-zag trail of cups and ribbons curved under the bright awning while the market hum carried on.
