The bottle rolled downhill, gathering speed along the paved slope. Halfway along, it nudged a folded scooter lying near the fountain railing; the scooter toppled, and its handle struck the bird feeder pole beside the playground edge. Seeds burst out in a soft spray, sprinkling onto the damp grass. Startled sparrows lifted at once and migrated toward the pond bank, their sudden wings pushing a cold draft across Ben’s neck.

Ben lunged forward, aiming to intercept the drifting bottle before it tapped the stone pond wall. His soles lost grip on loose grit, so he bent low, allowing thigh muscles to absorb the slide. Near his shoulder, a narrow rubber sleeve fitted around the chain—an unremarkable playground innovation added last spring—pinched against the post and acted as a silent facilitator, easing tension while slowing the planter’s swing. The moving pieces at last began to lose force. Nadia, who had been tracing circles in damp sand near the fountain, crossed quickly and pressed her sneaker on the scooter’s fallen wheel, halting its spin just short of the water. Beneath the bench, the varnished top kept rolling in a lazy circle around a single marble.
