Grains of gravel pressed against Amos’s palm as he steadied himself beside the warm roof railing. A round plastic puck—left from yesterday’s rooftop practice for the robotics tournament—spun away from him, guided by a gentle slope toward a wide ventilation shaft. Beyond the railing, banners from the event fluttered above the local park, their poles shaking whenever a gust crossed the gap between buildings. His awareness of time sharpened when the puck bumped a loose bolt, gained speed, and rolled faster toward the shaft’s lip.

A row of solar panels blocked the straight route. On one side lay a long path of firm tiles; on the other, a narrow bridge of metal grates slick with dust. The advancing puck rattled against another bolt, then curved even closer to the opening. Amos judged both routes, twisted his torso, and sprang onto the grated bridge, letting momentum carry him over the first gap. The thin bars flexed under each step, and fine powder rose, coating his shoes. Mid-stride he noticed something new: a folded paper crane wedged between two panels, rocking in the disturbed air. He hooked it with a fingertip, tucked it into his pocket, and pushed on. Near the shaft he lunged, slid on one knee, and managed to pick up the puck just before its edge met the drop. Tar smeared across his trousers, and the grate behind him still vibrated from the sudden stop. Tar streaks clung to his elbow. The puck spun slowly beside the silent vent.
