English 原文
The feed room stood five paces behind the open stable door, and two wooden buckets leaned against its inner wall, one already showing a slight list. Sage crouched near them, holding a small tin scoop. Finn knelt opposite, fingers brushing a line of cracked clay that divided the packed-earth floor. Yesterday’s rain had seeped through the roof, leaving plate-sized puddles. One bucket held thick beet dye left from marking the new lambs, the other carried pale soap water. Their weekend routine often placed these buckets here after chores, so the children found them untouched and cool. Above them, a rusty weather vane shaped like an eagle turned slowly in the loft window.
Sage tipped the dye just enough to send a single ribbon sliding toward the clay ridge. The dark liquid met the ridge, spread, and then curled along it like a winding creek. Finn answered with a slow pour from the soap water; pale foam slid after the beet dye, caught its edge, and pushed a purple swirl forward. The two streams slipped through a gap in the ridge and pooled under scattered straw. Steam rose, carrying a wonderful scent that mixed with dry hay.
Sage dropped a nugget of salt into the purple pool. Tiny bubbles snapped free, lifting streaks of brighter color that drifted across the surface. The flowing mix touched a bale of husks; dye climbed the stalks, while foam overflowed the opposite way. One overturned bucket then listed to the side, releasing the last gulp of liquid; pressure from the rush nudged a loose seed tray, which slid, struck Finn’s boot, and tipped more water onto the original stream. That newest wave chased earlier traces and carried bits of straw onto the foam, creating unique moving islands.
Both children stepped back, shoes dotted with purple flecks. Side by side, they bent and dragged twin sticks through the shallow flow, guiding the drifting straw into loops. Two wide rings stayed on the barn floor, half beet purple and half milky white. Hay dust still spun above the rings in a restless little spiral.
