English 原文
Pia stepped across the warped oak threshold of the clock tower, letting the street murmur collapse behind her.
Along the plank floor ran a looping smear of damp dust, a footprint stretched almost beyond recognition, its edges already turning ephemeral beneath the draught. Her gloved knuckles skimmed the stone wall; grit gathered under the leather, rough as sandpaper. Not once did the clock’s measured tick break for her entrance. Far above, gears meshed with a hushed groan, and the metal hand-rail trembled faintly against her palm, as though the whole tower breathed through iron ribs.
A narrow slit window appeared at the next landing, and she leaned out. The city roofs formed a patchwork tapestry of slate and brick, but what drew her gaze was a small urban garden on a neighboring terrace—wooden crates bursting with herbs, their leaves shifting like green coins in the wind. Between crates hopped a raven, its claws clicking against the rim of a watering can. Only after the bird lifted away did she notice black specks drifting down, confetti that vanished before touching the ledge.
Her fingertips tingling, she climbed higher. A solitary feather, glossy and curved, lay wedged beside the great pendulum weight; if the gear were any lower, it would shear the quill in two. She reached for it, then paused, thumb rubbing the faint soil still clinging to the shaft. The hesitation lasted a beat; she eased the feather free, and a thread followed—red, frayed, and surprisingly scented with rosemary. What she noticed first was the way the dust line below matched the colour of this crumbly soil. A second thread surfaced when she tilted the feather into the ethereal shaft of light spilling from the clock face—blue this time, finer, unmistakably part of fabric once woven for warmth. A silent decision carried her down the stairs, feather and threads gathered carefully in her fist.
Back on the ground floor, the looping smear awaited her, no longer abstract. Soil granules, downy barbs, and colored strands lay intermingled; the raven had ferried half an attic of materials to engineer a nest within the tower’s hidden rafters. She traced the curve again, noticing a seed tucked near the threshold hinge—evidence that the garden above spoke to this shadowed space through the bird’s labor. Pia tucked the loose feather beside the doorway trace and pressed her palm against the cool wood.
