English 原文
Ashia edged through the low archway of the kiln shed, her sleeve grazing brick dust from the jamb. A single damp footprint curved across the packed earth floor, its heel smudged, its toe marks sharp. What she noticed first was the faint outline of ridges, as though the print had cooled the ground beneath the orange haze that pulsed from the firebox. She stooped, pressed two fingers to the wet grit, and coolness leapt into her skin.
Beyond the footprint the kiln’s side wall radiated steady heat. Rows of unfired cups waited on a dedicated oak plank; their rims showed the slight shimmer of still-soft clay. Not once did the glow inside the chamber flicker, yet Ashia slid open the viewing slit, letting a narrow blade of light fall over the floor. Its brightness paused on a metal bucket half hidden behind stacked logs. A rumor drifted through the village that a wandering philanthropist had built this place, gifting space for anyone willing to risk a night’s firing. The small shelf of community vessels spoke of altruism more than trade; each piece bore a different hand, none signed.
Ashia gathered fresh pine lengths, then halted. The footprint had multiplied—three crescents now arced toward the bucket. Her willingness to arrive before dawn wavered; she set the wood down, palm tingling from its resin. If the spill were any larger, the ash bed would turn to mud, so she knelt and tilted the bucket. A thin crack ran from rim to base. Water beaded along it, dropped, and stamped the floor again. The trace she had read as a visitor’s step belonged only to dripping water. Her pause lengthened; the kiln, belly glowing, hissed where a drop met stone.
The handle’s rivet loose, she pried it free, the metal warm yet forgiving. Her first practice bowl—light as an eggshell—sat on the corner table; hairline flaws made it unfit for the shelf. Bowl in hand, she hesitated, thumb tracing its uneven lip. Her past hours of shaping whispered across the porous curve, yet no other vessel stood close. Bowl inverted, she pressed it against the fracture; clay met tin with a muffled click, and the leak slowed, then stopped. Her palms still tingling, she lifted a fallen shard from the floor. She placed the shard back onto the warm brick.
