English 原文
The return cart stood empty, but one thick atlas lay face-down on the carpet. A silverfish slipped from beneath the warped cover, its slick body leaving a faint trail that Quinn could feel when his knuckles brushed the pile.
He set the book upright; its cloth spine felt rough, threads loosened by years of handling. Between two swollen pages, a green glimmer caught a sliver of desk light. The sparkle looked like a jewel pressed inside the paper, yet the edges stayed hidden behind stiff fibres. Quinn slid a finger along the paper grain, but the gap proved too tight and the surface scratched his nail. Around him the unconditional hush of the reading room held firm, broken only by the muffled hum of air vents and the soft bump of another patron’s shoe against carpet. A cool reflection flashed again when he angled the book, so he tried a gentler squeeze, mindful not to tear the page; still the object refused to shift.
Lights above the checkout counter dimmed to warn of closing time. The wall clock had crept into overtime, its hands already five minutes past the posted hour. Quinn hoped to free the fragment before the staff reached this aisle. He tilted the atlas farther, and a tiny shard slid out, landing in his palm with a faint tap. The piece was not a jewel after all; it was a broken glass bead that had been glued to the lamp chain overhead and must have snapped off long ago. He traced the bead’s chipped rim—edges smooth on one side, gritty on the other—then glanced up. The matching beads still hung there like dusty drops. Choosing quickly, he stepped onto the low kick-stool, pressed one steady foot against its rubber tread, and was easing the loosened lamp cover with both thumbs.
