What the Washer Hid-

English 原文
Coins ready in his palm, Quinn pushed through the laundromat’s glass door. Warm air met him at once, tinged with detergent and softener. He had folded clothes here on countless rainy evenings; the linoleum path between the washers usually felt familiar enough to walk with eyes half-closed. Tonight, however, the entry rug curled upward, as though a gale had slipped beneath the frame earlier and forgotten to smooth it back down. He stepped over the ridge, the bristles brushing his ankle, and looked for his favourite front-loader. Not once did he glance at the clock; the machines themselves kept time with their steady hum.
Only after dropping his bundle on the plastic chair did he notice small rearrangements. A scoop, crusted with blue powder, leaned against a different barrel than before. One dryer vibrated so hard that a boisterous beat rose above the radio, as if the drum tried to make a splash inside its own metal shell. Between cycles, pale steam drifted upward until it formed a loose nimbus around the ceiling light, the glow turning cloud edges gold. Quinn reached toward the nearest washer, then paused; its handle felt grittier, as though another palm, larger than his, had wrestled it recently. What caught his eye first was a faint crescent of soap suds under the bench.
He bent to wipe the suds, and a coin slipped from his cuff, spinning behind the washer row. If the drum were louder, it might drown the sigh that left him as he knelt. Floor tiles chilled his knuckles. Pushing aside lint, he met the wall’s baseboard and stopped. A painted fish, scales chipped yet bright, swam along the skirting. Another two inches on, a second fish surfaced, mouth open in quiet bravery against years of scuff marks. The mural ran deeper, hidden by the heavy machines he had loaded week after week. Coins gathered, he brushed the cracked paint once, then rose, shirt grazing the warm barrel behind.
The wash finished soon after. Quinn filled an empty dryer but chose a seat facing the wall instead of the window this time. Outside, wind pushed litter across the pavement; inside, the fish waited behind steel and soap. When the final buzzer sounded, he folded each shirt a little slower, letting the fabric cool. He walked out with the basket balanced against his hip, and the curled rug behind him stayed lifted like a small unanswered question.
