English 原文
By the time Pearl returned to the back workshop, steamy apple-skin aroma had floated from the kettle and mixed with the sharp tang of fresh shavings. Walnut oil lingered near the bench, while a vinegar-edge from drying glue pressed at her nose. She had left a cedar box on the highest shelf; now she wanted the tiny wooden hinge inside it. A stool rocked under her boots, releasing a dusty, nutmeg cloud each time she shifted her weight. Tranquility lay over the yard outside, yet inside the air tasted busy, almost pepper-hot.
Pearl tugged the box, but pine sap that had seeped during yesterday’s escapade of quick varnishing glued it tight. She ran a thorough fingertip around the rim; resinous fragrance coated her skin like honey. Bram stepped through the side door, carrying a walking stick he had been sanding—the stick gave off a damp moss scent. Without a word he lifted it and pressed its round end between shelf and box. The wood groaned, orange peel bitterness puffed out, and the lid sprang free. A roll of carved birch strips shot downward, scattering a sweet-smelling powder that tasted of old cinnamon when it touched their lips. Inside the unrolled strips lay a miniature relief: a dense thicket of tiny intertwined branches no wider than a coin.
Pearl balanced the delicate piece on her palm; lavender wax from the carving filled the room. Bram blew gently, sending almond-light dust off its surface, and they placed the treasure on a low table to fix the hinge later. Outside the open window, glue scents drifted into the yard. A sparrow on the sill snatched one strand of shavings and flicked away into the mild dusk.
