Cole waited beside her, the last drops from his towel load still dripping along the rim. A faded poster of a green glen fluttered on the damp wall behind the detergent shelf, its corners curled. Pipes under the concrete floor rattled, then fell quiet for a brief interlude, and every small echo in the stairwell grew sharper.

Kira pressed START. The machine lurched; uneven weight made the tub hammer against its frame. A thin river of foamy water slipped from the gasket and traced a winding path across the slippery tiles. Vibration reached the storage rack above, where a mint plant in a glazed pot trembled. Its loose elastic keeper slid free; gritty soil spilled over the lip. The damp grains exposed a tiny ecosystem of tangled roots and pale insects, and several gnats drifted into the air like soft dust motes.

One gnat floated through the open balcony door and brushed the whiskers of Mrs. Reyes’s cat, dozing on a warm towel. The startled animal sprang toward the rooftop clothesline; clothespins clattered as the wire shook. Cole swung the balcony panel inward to block further leaps while Kira thumbed the PAUSE pad, steadying the washer before it could stride farther across the floor. The pipes resumed their hum, water pressure smoothing out as suds thinned around their shoes. Above their heads, a single yellow clothespin spun along the vibrating wire toward the far gutter.
