Ruby pushed a narrow cart of wooden slats along the damp pier. She and her younger sibling Jude came each month to oil the metal cleats that held visiting boats in place. Rust streaks reached across the bolts, and the pier planks showed dark grooves where countless ropes had rubbed for years; those marks looked like a sprawling family tree drawn by salt and sun. Ruby had lived near this harbor all her life, so the work followed steady memories of earlier mornings. She knelt, set a tin can of grease beside her knee, and began turning a small wrench. The tool slid once when a low swell lifted the pier, yet her knee braced, and the wrench bit again.

A sudden shadow skimmed the deck. An eagle swept low, its wings catching the midday light before it climbed toward the moored masts. The rush of air tipped the open can, and a round screw rolled, then another, bouncing toward the edge. Ruby shifted her weight, pressed one boot sideways, and the cart’s front wheel nudged the screws away from the gap between planks. Behind her, the water slapped harder as a ferry’s wake reached the harbor wall; the pier tilted, then leveled while loose coils of line quivered against a piling. She steadied the can, wiped grease from her palm, and continued turning the last hinge until the metal aligned with the wood again. The wake faded, small rings spread across the surface, and distant gulls glided without haste.
