English 原文
The halogen bulb above the work table buzzed and threw sharp strips of white across the jars. Kent set a woven basket of tuning plates on the cork mat, while Pearl balanced a slim glass tube between her palms. They wanted the tube to sing so they could compare its pitch with two brass rings. Plenty of loose lids rattled nearby whenever the overhead vent hummed, and each hum echoed along the aluminum trays, drowning the faint note they chased. Years of quiet wisdom showed in the way Pearl spaced every object. They had tested three positions already, but the competing sounds kept flowing through the room. Kent pinched one ring and tapped the tube; a clear ding rose, then vanished under the vent’s steady vibration.
They moved closer to the window where the air stayed calmer, but the trays still sent a sharp echo toward their ears. Cool air carried a faint scent of dust from the stone sill. Pearl slid a comfortable cotton square—once part of a bright bazaar banner—under the largest tray. The fabric muffled the echo, yet the vent’s hum still blurred the ringing glass. Kent lifted a wooden lid and propped it above the vent grille; the lid vibrated, adding a low rattle instead of silence. He twisted it until the slats broke the airflow, and the hum dropped into a soft throb. The next tap on the tube produced a clean, lingering tone that curled through the room without interference. Both learners traced that sound onto narrow paper strips, their pencils moving together in jagged curves. Two fresh curves now crossed on the tray, and a faint vibration passed through the pencils again.
