Stapler Behind the Board-

English 原文
A bare patch on the supply pegboard drew Ruby’s stare; the metal stapler usually hung there, yet only a faint outline and a dangling tag creaked against one another under the vent’s low drone. She stepped closer, shoes brushing carpet fibers, and the hum of fluorescent tubes thickened overhead while a tabby behind the reception desk flicked its tail against a waste-basket. Ruby’s handouts for the meeting room whispered together as she fanned them, but each loose edge rustled a reminder of her new dilemma: loose pages, no fastener, and the printer across the corridor already coughing in stop-start bursts. A sudden gale of conditioned air swung the corridor door inward; the puff rattled a stack of plastic trays, and their tremor nudged a box of clips. The box thudded down, bumped a row of folders, and those folders slid, wheels squealing, against the mobile whiteboard.
The whiteboard rolled, casters ticking, until its frame dinged the printer table. The jolt shook the machine; a knot of paper finally spit out with a dry rip, ending that particular plight but beginning another. The board’s lower ledge struck Ruby’s coffee cup; porcelain clinked, liquid splashed, and a brown trickle pattered across tiles toward a power strip. That creeping patter signaled a fresh predicament. Ruby dropped to one knee, chair legs scraping as she wedged a nearby conference chair between the whiteboard and the shelf, halting further drift. While she blotted the floor, something metallic slid down the board’s frame with a soft scrape and landed beside her heel. The missing stapler had been wedged behind the marker tray, hidden until the cascade exposed it. Papers finally met metal teeth with a satisfying crunch, though the projector still whined while its loose cable vibrated against the wall. A whiskered observer twitched an ear at that faint twang and padded along the skirting toward the swaying patch of light at the doorway.
