English 原文
The swings swayed gently, but every seat was already taken. Nell waited near the bench, toes pressing into the elastic ground as if testing a trampoline. Fragrance fills the air where low bushes brushed the fence; crushed leaves released a sharp sweetness each time the breeze rolled over them. Across the slide area, Ian balanced on one foot, then the other, ankles flexing to keep steady on the slight slope beside the climbing structure. Both kept glancing at the moving chains, counting how long each rider might stay.
When one child finally hopped off, Nell hurried forward. Her fingers curled around the damp metal, only to pull back—the seat had been polished by hundreds of shoes and now felt slick. A sudden cloudburst answered before either spoke. Droplets thickened into a torrential curtain, soaking the vacant swing and drumming on hoods and shoulders. Ian’s jacket clung to his forearms, heavy with water. He dragged the sleeve across the seat, but moisture spread instead of disappearing. Knees bent, Nell lifted the rubber slab, shaking it toward the grass, yet droplets clung like beads. Both retreated under the slide’s tunnel, calves tightening as they crouched in the cramped space. For a moment, the playground became a shimmer of puddles and bouncing rings on every surface.
Rain eased almost as quickly as it had started. Ian pointed to the sandbox bucket abandoned near the fountain. Its curved side carried only a thin film of water. Working together, they inverted the bucket over the swing, trapping remaining drops, then tipped it off so the water spilled away. Nell lowered herself first, feeling the seat grip better now. Ian gripped the chains behind her, giving a measured push; each arc stretched her spine and released a pleasant pull through her knees. Minutes later they returned to the bench. The wooden slats that had been dry at the beginning now showed uneven dark patches where rainwater lingered, and a loose shingle somewhere above scraped against the gutter.
