Three loose paperclips had skittered across the meeting table before Ben’s palm trapped the last one against the smooth veneer. He and Viola had hurried from that room toward the printer area, documents sliding in a slick stack between their elbows. Warm air from the ceiling vent brushed their sleeves, while the carpet’s low pile tugged at the edges of their shoes. At the printer, a stiff wad of paper resisted every pull; its rollers, already warm-to-touch, refused to budge. The machine’s single foible—jamming after long jobs—had returned. Ben flexed his fingertips, coaxing the gritty edge of the jam forward. When it tore free, the sudden release sent the entire stack drooping; sheets brushed the floor tiles, then drifted toward the corridor kiosk where an overhead fabric canopy hung as advertisement for the weekly charity sale.

A fallen sheet glided under the kiosk’s narrow leg and lifted it just enough for a row of souvenir mugs to rattle. One mug bumped a metal coffee urn perched beside the break-room doorway. Hot liquid sloshed inside, pushing the urn’s spout against a potted vine trained along a lightweight wooden trellis. The trellis shuddered, leaning across the passage like a swinging gate. Viola sprang forward; her palms pressed the cool frame, slowing its tilt before the mugs could tumble farther. Ben reached for the printer’s power cord, aiming to halt any fresh feed before another jam began. The cable brushed his knuckles, loose dust slipping over the rubber sheath, while the trellis still quivered beneath Viola’s steady grip. Outside the break room, a single sheet of paper kept sliding along the glossy tiles toward reception.
