English 原文
The ticket printer blinked bright green, but the line of customers stayed rigid as stacked envelopes. Tess balanced their cardboard box against her hip, feeling its uneven weight slide toward her elbow with every shift. A sticker tracing an old ocean voyage curved along one corner, and soft padding bulged inside. The metal counter ahead vibrated each time a clerk stamped a parcel; the resonance travelled through the floor and up Tess’s shins. Above the service windows, fluorescent tubes hummed. Faith hung over the room the way dust hangs in high beams of light—present, yet unnoticed by most bodies bent over forms.
At the scale, Tess lowered the box. The red digits jumped past the limit. Bram unpeeled the tape, pulled out the round cushion he had stuffed on top, and a cloud of pale feathers drifted upward. Air from the ceiling vent carried the flecks toward the glass entrance. A tanager perched outside noticed the swirling specks, sprang forward, and shot through the half-open door. The bird’s sudden swerve clipped the ticket machine; its plastic frame shuddered, ejecting two extra numbers that skittered across the tiles. People rocked back on their heels, arms adjusting to keep bags from bumping one another.
The tanager skidded against the polished floor, wings scraping, then leapt toward the gap Tess’s lifted package created between shoulders. Bram twisted, forming a loose tunnel with his arms; the bird arrowed through, found a path of cooler air, and zipped out the same door as a stroller rolled aside. Feathers kept gliding, but fewer now. Tess pressed the repacked box onto the scale again. The digits steadied under the limit, and she pushed the parcel forward while her knees tingled from the earlier strain. She and Bram stepped toward the payment desk. Behind them, one of the stray number slips slid beneath the scale platform and twitched each time the device recalibrated.
