Bram twisted, forming a loose tunnel with his arms; the bird arrowed through, found a path of cooler air, and zipped out the same door as a stroller rolled aside. Feathers kept gliding, but fewer now. Tess pressed the repacked box onto the scale again. The digits steadied under the limit, and she pushed the parcel forward while her knees tingled from the earlier strain. She and Bram stepped toward the payment desk. Behind them, one of the stray number slips slid beneath the scale platform and twitched each time the device recalibrated.
