English 原文
Wren slid her clipboard across the reception desk, and its corner nudged a clear plastic goblet standing near the water dispenser. The cup tipped, rolled off the edge, and began a silent journey over the blue-grey linoleum. Fluorescent light bounced across its curved surface while a faded painting of a meadowlark watched from the opposite wall. Behind Wren, the number board crackled out of sequence, adding a low ripple of frustration that floated between the plastic chairs.
The rolling cup struck the flat stack of magazines on a side table. The pile had formed a neat little plateau, but the impact pushed the glossy sheets forward like sliding ice. One thick issue skimmed the table lip, dropped, and slapped against a shallow tray filled with blue plastic tokens. The tray jolted; tokens leapt free, pattering across the floor. Several coins found a hairline crack between two tiles—a narrow ravine that guided them toward the hallway. Each token flashed under the ceiling lamps as it skittered, showing tiny arcs of reflected light.
A consultation room door swung outward just then, its metal edge meeting the runaway tokens and halting their flight. The door’s motion also nudged the tray back into place, stopping further spills. One coin escaped the blockade, spun beside Wren’s shoe, and kept circling, slower each time. If the floor sloped even a fraction more, the disc would drift into the waiting room again. Wren crouched, fingers extended, while the last blue token continued its wobbling spiral toward her hand.
